In celebration of Apocalypse Now‘s 40th anniversary, IMAX and Lionsgate are releasing a Final Cut IMAX version of Francis Ford Coppola’s critically acclaimed Vietnam War film at select theaters later this summer.

In speaking about the re-release, director Francis Ford Coppola said that “In truth, I’ve always wanted Apocalypse Now to be exhibited in the grandest format of cinema conceivable. And now audiences will have a chance to experience Final Cut in the most immersive format in existence.”

For those who have never seen the epic film, Apocalypse Now was directed by Coppola and released in 1980. Set in 1970 Vietnam, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) takes a perilous and increasingly hallucinatory journey upriver to find and terminate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-promising officer who has reportedly gone completely mad. In the company of a Navy patrol boat filled with street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer (Robert Duvall), and a crazed freelance photographer (Dennis Hopper), Willard travels further and further into the heart of darkness.

Restored from the original negative for the first time ever and digitally remastered for IMAX with crystal clear images and powerful surround sound, Apocalypse Now Final Cut is a must-see cinematic treat. Only in select IMAX theaters for a limited time, tickets are on sale now. Showtime listings are available at IMAX.com

Apocalypse Now Final Cut won three Golden Globes, was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and is rated as one of AFI’s top 100 films. It’s a true classic not to be missed in full IMAX glory on August 15 and 18 at select IMAX theaters.
