Star Wars Day has come and gone along with Star Wars Celebration (2015). But excitement is still building for the new movie,”Star Wars: The Force Awakens” slated for release by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on December 18, 2015.
It can be said that Star Wars is perhaps one of the most enduring pop culture phenomenon of the last half-century and it is poised to attract a whole new generation of fans when the seventh feature film in the series, started by visionary director George Lucas in 1977, hits the movie screens.
The nearly forty year old franchise boasts legions of older fans not only excited for the new Star Wars big screen release, but nostalgic for the old days as well. And it is precisely those fans that will definitely appreciate this set of behind-the-scenes photos from the original trilogy posted on their official site and made public by Lucasfilm Ltd. The images are rarely seen, behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of George Lucas and his Star Wars vision from long ago.
As for the real die-hard fans of the original 1977 classic, why not re-visit the documentary, “The Making of Star Wars,” which debuted on ABC only a few short months after “Star Wars: A New Hope”’s original theatrical release in 1977. It is almost an hour-long look at how the original film was put together and is hosted by a couple of the galaxy’s most famous droids, C-3PO and R2-D2, with additional narration by William Conrad. The original title was “The Making of Star Wars …as told by C-3PO and R2-D2” and originally aired on September 16, 1977.
This ‘inside look’, posted by YouTuber Sanchez del Campo, includes rundowns of the film’s major characters, along with a history of George Lucas’ film making and inspirations. There are also plenty of shots of the effects that went into the film which is a fascinating look at the film’s production.
This inside-look documentary has seen home releases for years, most recently in the 2011 Blu-ray box set of all six films. So it really provides no new insights or new information. Nevertheless, for Star Wars fans who have never seen it, it re-captures the spirit of a less complex and more innocent time.
